After Microsoft pulled the plug on MS Money in the summer, Intuit’s Quicken is left as the only PC based personal finance software that helps people track their spending and manage their investments (of course, Quicken also does other things such as budgeting), unless you want to use a web-based tool. I have been using Quicken Home & Business to manage our finance (actually, it’s more like tracking than managing) for years. My general feeling of the software is that it makes managing money easier, especially when you have dozens of bank accounts, credit cards, and investments like I do. However, since I mainly use Quicken to track investments, I am pretty sure that I missed lot of good functions & features the software has to offer. Now that Intuit has released its latest 2010 version of Quicken, the popular software has got even more powerful and user friendly (see highlights of 2010 Quicken) with an array of new and improved features.

Last week, I had a post on Intuit’s ongoing promotion of a few Quicken products which will save you $20 if you purchase a qualified software before November 1st. It’s a nice deal if you want to purchase Quicken Deluxe because the discount is a third of the original price. Pretty good, right?

The 2008 tax season is just around the corner, wouldn’t it be nice to prepare your tax filings for free? Sure, it would. If you haven’t already got your 2008 tax preparation software yet, here’s your chance to win one of ten copies of either TurboTax Deluxe or TaxCut Premium, federal, state and e-filing all included.

In the past, I bought my own tax preparation software. Even though at the end I paid only a small amount for the software after rebates, it was still quite a hassle to have to submit, track the rebates and wait the checks to come. I’d love to have someone give me a free copy This year is a little different, however, because I do have a free copy, the TaxCut I won a couple days ago.

I have used both TurboTax and TaxCut, started with TaxCut but only switched to TurboTax recently because I also use Quicken to track my finance. Using tools from the same company makes things a little easier. So far as preparing tax filing is concerned, I don’t think there is much difference between TurboTax and TaxCut from what I can tell: They follow the same tax codes, ask pretty much the same questions throughout the interviews, and both have tools to maximize your deductions (sometime depends on the software versions). If you are like me using Quicken to manage your money and investments and may export data from Quicken to your tax software, then TurboTax is a convenient choice. If you just want to file your taxes, then either TurboTax or TaxCut can get the job done.

Now back to the giveaway. I will run the giveaway in two parts (so you have two chances to win), like Jim at Blueprint for Finance Prosperity and Nickel at Five Cent Nickel did with their recent giveaways. In the first part, you will have a chance to win 1 of 6 copies (3 TurboTax and 3 TaxCut). For the last Daily Giveaway contest, I asked participants to guess closing number of all three indices, the Dow, the S&P, and the Nasdaq. In the first four days of contests, we always had a winner making near perfect guess, so I thought I could make it a little tougher to win the final prize because the three indices are not in lock-step all the time. Looking at the entries to the contest, it seems that I succeeded in making the final prize, a $50 Amazon.com gift card, hard to win. The guesses were all over the place. But Jay from Market Folly, who already won the first day’s contest, still managed to grab the last gift card with his guesses:

I received a deck of NURU Personal Finance cards from the publisher a while ago, but have been putting off taking a look at it until now. Actually, I think this, putting some basic concepts of personal finance on 2.5″x3.5″ cards, is a pretty good idea because you can carry the cards wherever you go and get a quick reference whenever you want. Very convenient.

The deck consists of 28 cards organized in 7 categories:

• Essential Vocabulary
• Personal Planning
• Investing
• Loans
• Retirement Vehicles
• Credit
• Insurance

So what kind of concepts are covered in the cards? For instance, one of the cards in the Essential Vocabulary category explains Compound Interest, which “is the interest you receive on interest you’ve already earned.” After giving simple example on how compound interest works, the card also shows a Quick Fact of compounding, which is quite interesting:

Money that is invested at 10% interest compounded annually will double every 7 years!

Not that you can earn 10% interest from investments now, but that’s indeed how compounding works, as long as you can find the investment that gives you 10% real return

Today is another volatile day of the major indices and the Dow finished the session down another triple-digit. Looking back the trading days in the past couple of months, 100+ points either way seem to the the norm of the daily movement of the Dow, which closed at 13,167 today, losing almost 173 points.
