Zecco Review, Promotion Codes Plus Free Trading Account Opening Process

Well, I eventually opened a Zecco account after mulling the idea of getting commission free trading for a long time. The main attraction is, of course, zero commission trading. Currently, I am paying anywhere from $4 to $7 commission on stock trading. It would be nice to eliminate the trading cost. However, my concern is that I am not very confident that they can maintain their fee structure. In the past, I have gone through the process of selling my holdings when the brokerage changed policy and started to charge fees. I don’t want to do that again should Zecco later abandon the zero-commission policy. Plus, I only trade several times in a year now, so the savings on fees aren’t very appealing.
There are two reasons that made me change my mind. First, I want to drop my account at Sharebuilder.com with which I buy $100 of PowerShares Dividend Archiever (PFM) every month and pay $4 for each trading ($3 after Costco rebate). That’s 3% extra cost that is not doing me any good and moving my Sharebuilder account to Zecco can low the overall cost. Second, I have seen recently some other bloggers share their experience about Zecco and it turned out to be quite positive. Thus, I also want to give it a try. But my concerns still remain, so I will only use Zecco as a supplemental account while keeping Scottrade as my primary brokerage.
Last Thursday night, I pulled the trigger and opened a Zecco account. The online application process is quite straightforward and, as they stated, it was done all online without involving any paperwork. To get a Zecco account, I first had to register a myZecco account, which has nothing to do with trading, but will allow me to participate their blog and forum discussions. The registration took only a minute and once myZecco account is active, I can proceed to trading account application.
During the application, I had a chance to select what type of account I want.

Currently, Zecco offers personal accounts (individual or joint account) as well as retirement accounts (Traditional, Roth, or Rollover IRA). This is my personal account, so I chose Joint Account.
The reset of the application was rather routine. I was asked for information such as name, address, SSN, employment, income, investment purpose, investable assets amount, and bank, etc. One thing that I felt not necessary was Trading Experience question (left). Since I never traded Options and Commodities, I left them unchanged when I made the selection. But it appeared I have to choose an answer regardless whether I have the experience or not, otherwise, it will give me an error. But it wasn’t a major issue.
At the end of the application, I was asked to sign electronically, therefore, no paperwork necessary.

After the application was completed, I was told that the system will generate an account number for me before I can access my account, and it could take from a few moments to up to 3 hours. The waiting was about an hour and the account appeared in the Trading login field. Then I used an initial password (”Trading Key” as they call it) to log into my account.
The first thing I did was to setup an external ACH account so I can transfer money to Zecco and make trades and this is what I found the most inconvenient part. The following is a screenshot of the interface on how to setup (and check the status of) an ACH account.

To initiate the process, I had to use the Request Now button, which is fine. But the For Account filed is empty and I had to type in my account number manually. And later on, every time I want to check the status of my account, I have to enter the account number. So you either have to memorize the account number or write it down so you can refer to it. What’s worse, since I already logged in, I couldn’t find my account number on the page and had to logged out and write the account number on a piece of paper and started all over again. I mean, this is the only account with Zecco, what’s the meaning of asking me to enter my account number every time? Would it be convenient to just display the account number once logged in or provide a drop down menu to let the user make selections if there are multiple accounts?
Anyway, I requested an external ACH link to my checking account and the next day, I was able to verify two small deposits and proceed with fund transfer, which will be done tomorrow. My first transfer was $1,000. Though I was told by Zecco that their $1,000-minimum promotion has expired, a reader has informed me last week the he was still able to open an account and funded it with $1,000. I will have to wait to see if my transfer is successful. There was no mention of account minimum throughout the process, though.
Overall, the account application process was quite simple, but it doesn’t mean it is convenient or easy to use. Above is a picture of the main interface of my Zecco account, Trading Center (click to enlarge). Though it pretty much has all the functions that I need, I have say that the interface is not very impressive. Maybe it’s because right now I don’t have any position, so I can’t fully explore all the functionalities it has to offer. I will have the chance to test it once the account is funded.

That bit that asks for the account number all the time is dead on. QUITE annoying and it seems entirely unnecessary.
So what is the catch ? How does Zecco make money ?
Good review, sun.
I thought the application was the most tedious element of the sign-up process. As I documented in my zecco review, They ask for a lot of extraneous information that doesn’t seem all that significant.
I guess $0 stock trades requires a boatload of references and information on your part.
I’m thinking of buying my dot com stocks with Zecco, simply because most don’t pay dividends, but at least I’ll get free trades.
SJ: Zecco does require fees for option trading and it pays close to nothing for any uninvested money. Also Zecco runs Google ads. I don’t know exactly how they make money, but these could be some sources. And it’s also the reason I am not sure if they can maintain the current fee structure or not.
TJP: Yes, they asked a lot of questions that you have to answer, but don’t seem to be relevant. For Zecco, there are a lot to be improved. I wonder how much has changed since they launched the program one year ago.
Zecco is ideal for frequent trades. If I want to buy a stock and hold for a year or longer, whether I pay $0 or $7 commission really doesn’t make too much difference. I planed to use Zecco as a play account so I can buy and sell more often and make some quick bucks, hopefully
Hi , recently I moved my account at ING Bank in Spain to Zecco´s in the EEUU, but when I open the main windows to star my operations, I get the surprise for the appearance of new phrases that I don’t know exactly where they come from, in fact, I’ve been calculating the numbers and I don’t get the point.
The account that I opened with them was an Individual, I will put here the real number to see if someone can help me to understand where the red numbers come from.
In the Positions´tab, I bought: 39 TMTA at 7.94$ = 309.66$ as a market value for this, besides, I bought 177 SMTC at 2.47$ = 436.75$ too, the total of the market value for this is = 746.41$ (309.66+436.75), until here I understand.
Now, when I go to Balance´s tab, here the problem begin, appears the Market Value = 757.50 $, why?, why is it not the 746.41$??.
The Total Equity = 710.58$ where is this come from??.
The Maint. Excess = 121.00$ why this number?, I searched at Google the meaning of this point and I don’t understand why I have it in my account if I opened an Individual account and not a margin, even thought, I left the possibility in the future to have a Margin, but I don’t want to use any margin even my account is below 2000$ required.
I’m seeing that the Buying Power = 242.00$, it means, twice the Maint Excess before, what is it means, may I use this amount of money to buy something?.
I don’t want to use any borrowed money from this broker, I don’t want to pay any fee for this concept, so, I ask, what is the money that I need to use to buy more equities, the number that appears at the Cash Balance?
What is the borrowed money that offer the broker, the number that appears at the Buying Power?
By the way, my actual broker is Zecco.com, my email is boribon_jp@yahoo.es, please, feel free to contact me if you can give to me the answer that I need
Terrible company. They cancelled my account after I complained to the SEC about their huge system failure in August when nobody could trade the Friday the fed lowered the interest rate by 50 points, with many losing thousands without being able to buy back into the market until Monday. Huge amount of people that hate this so-called broker. One guy had to sue to get the money in his cash account returned.
See http://www.zecco.com/forums/Zecco-Trading-10423_1.aspx for comments from other dissatisfied customers.
It is a lot hidden fee
I have an account more than a year. I hate this one
my Account No. 71251136
this website only is SCAM
They charge me $20 for withdraw $300, that is unacceptable.
I’m gonna find somewhere esle.
Kenny: Sorry to hear your experience. I have never transferred money out of Zecco, so I don’t if there’s any other fees they charge. Could you please tell me how you transferred your money out? Via ACH, by wire, or check?
I know free sounds good and all but take it from me and my numerous experiences with their customer service that the customer service is very close to horrible. 30 mins call waits is usual. Their customer service email is not monitored by people who care about zecco business and it more often than not will result in your emails being ignored. After almost 8 months of being with Zecco I am forced to bid goodbye. It surely works if you can space some time and control your anger and the feeling of being ignored or not cared for as a customer.
Poor Customer Service
I have gone through the setup and funding process. I scheduled a transfer and they executed it early causing a NFS charge from my bank AND a 2$5 fee from them. My bank refunded the bank fee even though it wasn’t their fault. Zecco refuses to refund their $25 fee even though it is clear they pulled the money 2 days early. Also, instead of showing a -$25 balance, they posted a -$20,025 balance and issued a margin call on my account. I was then in the hole 20K+ before I even started trading. I guess this is how they fund 10 free trades a month.
Please be careful using this service. It isn’t worth the headaches.
