Savvy Steward: Actually, I haven’t looked at international REIT yet, but it could be an interesting idea. Are you aware of any good choices? If I will go for it, I probably will look for ETFs instead of mutual funds. The only problem is, international REIT ETFs may not be available at this time.

MossySF: I think between 10 and 15% of REIT is a reasonable allocation. While the real estate is kind of struggling right now, performance of REIT is still quite good. When will be the best time to enter? I don’t know. But if I want to hold it for years, it won’t really matter too much on entering now or a year from now as many people predicted that by that time the housing market should rebound.

As mentioned by a few posters, REITs by itself is not a good diversification strategy. However, depending on your strategy and your risk level, you may be comfortable picking a REIT such as SPG or GGP rather than picking a ETF or a fund such as TRREX.

I think REITs are due for a pull back a little but I don’t want to miss the upward trend should it head up as it has slowly the past few weeks. I personally took a bit off the table and only have about 7% of my portfolio in a fund that invests in REITs.

I’m also at 8% now w/ goals to be about 10% domestic REIT and 5% international REIT. But I think I’ll hold off on bumping up the % for now.

REITs are an excellent diversification vehicle as The Sun says, however, picking an individual REIT is like picking an individual stock. It is an undiversified investment.

Personally, I invest approximately 8% of my portfolio in Vanguards REIT Index fund, which gives me a broader and much diversified exposure to this segment.

In the long run, I would like to increase my exposure to real estate to 10% to 12%, however, as other commenters have pointed out that graph does look scary and I will keep my exposure at current levels for the next year or two, until the situation calms down a bit.

I noticed there are purchasing fees associated with the Computer Shares option. Would you recommend buying through them or my discount broker? It’s the fees that I’m most worried about.

Yes, real estate may have already passed its peak time and getting in now is, as you said, buying high. When I wanted to say is that having REIT in the portfolio can provide better returns in the long term due to the weak correlation between real estate and the general market. Looking at REIT itself, it’s just as volatile as any other industries. However, the low-risk/high-return effect from REIT is when you put it in the mix with other asset classes. Even though we see real estate is struggling right now, but the demand for houses is still there. Therefore, in long term, investing in REIT still makes sense.

I’d be worried about piling on after a large run-up of real-estate. Buy high sell low does not lead to good results. Are there in fact low-risk REITs? What kind of real-estate would that be?
