Yazmyn: The effort I was talking about is that there are brokers, such as Zecco, charge no or very little commission for trading stocks and they also offer free dividend reinvestment. So essentially you are dealing with one firm, either a broker or a DRIP program provider such as Direct Investing as you mentioned, or ComputerShares as I am using. If I am already using a broker to buy stocks, do I have to use a DRIP program? The answer may be not given the extra work. Besides, many company charges per share based fees on buying and selling their stocks through a DRIP program. With a broker, you only pay a flat fee, regardless how many shares you buy or sell. That said, I am using DRIP programs and think it's a good way to invest a small amount at a time. But there are other options out there.

What effort is my question? Go to www.directinvesting.com, there you will see that they do all the legwork for you to get an account open in your name at the companies. You buy a single share of stock or as many as 100 shares from them. Then they get you on the books and records of the company as a shareholder; after that you can invest directly--WITHOUT GOING THROUGH A STOCKBROKER! In addition DRIPs make great gifts. Its the gift that "keeps on giving". They're great for birthdays, graduations, holidays, etc...so YES, they're still worth the effort!
