Summary:

TD Ameritrade is a leading stock broker that offers investors a full range of services and products, including more than 100 commission-free ETFs from iShare, Vanguard, and State Street, etc. For a limited time, you can trade commission free for 60 days when opening a new TD Ameritrade account and receive up to $600 bonus.

TD Ameritrade is one of the leading discount brokerage firms that offers investors a wide range of products and services to meet their investment needs. The company is not stranger to me and I have written about it here a few times in the past. However, despite its well-known name, I have never really used TD Ameritrade for investing, not in mutual funds, not in stocks, and not even in ETFs that are now being offered by the firm without commission. The reason that I have stayed away from TD Amerirade is that I don’t consider it as a true discount broker because of the commission, which is currently at $9.99 per online trade. For me, I always keep a close eye on the cost of trading, so those that charge the least seem to get my attention most of the time. That’s just the way I pick which broker to use. By always going with the cheapest, perhaps I have missed some other features or services, maybe something more useful than what I have now, offered by other brokers that charge a higher fee. But that’s fine with me.

Of course, there are more than just cost when selecting brokers. So what seems not to be a good choice for me, such as TD Amerirade, may be a perfect fit for you (after you do your research). If that’s the case, then you probably can use this promotional offer from TD Ameritrade. From now until the end of the year, if you open an TD Ameritrade brokerage account, whether it’s individual, joint, or IRA account, and make a deposit of $2,000 or more within the first 60 days of account opening, then you are eligible to trade for free for 60 days after he account is funded. Though the commission-free trades are limited to 500 trades during the 60-day period, that’s still a very large number of trades you can make without paying any fee for your online order. And if you make more deposit into your new account, you can even receive cash back up to $600. Particularly, you can

  • Get $100 bonus if the account is funded with $25,000 or more within 60 days of account opening, or
  • Get $300 bonus if the account is funded with $100,000 or more within 60 days of account opening, or
  •  Get $600 bonus if the account is funded with $250,000 or more within 60 days of account
Since I am not a TD Ameritrade customer and have no direct experience with them, I can’t say too much regarding their products and services. I do, however, know that TD Ameritrade is one of the brokerage firms that let its customers trade some ETFs for free. In fact, since late 2010, TD Ameritrade, customers can buy and sell 101 ETFs without paying any regular commission. As you know, TD Ameritrade isn’t the only broker that offers commission-free ETF trading. Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, Scottrade, and Firstrade are part of a growing number of brokerages that don’t charge commission for transactions involving certain Exchange-Traded Funds (check each broker for details on what ETFs are eligible for commission-free trade). But so far it seems that TD Ameritrade has the largest selection of ETFs that can be traded for free. Among the 101 ETFs offered by TD Ameritrade, there are 47 iShare  funds, 32 Vanguard funds, 12 State Street Global Advisor funds, 1 Barclays fund, 2 iPath funds, 3 PowerShare funds, 2 Van Eck funds, and 1 Wisdom Tree fund. These funds give investors, big or small, a wide range of investment choices, covering such categories as equity (31 funds), bonds (32 funds), international (31 funds), sectors (3 funds) and commodity (4 funds).

While you can buy and sell 101 ETFs for free, you do have to hold any commission-free ETF in your account for 30 calendar days; otherwise, the standard commission of $9.99 will be charged.

Now that you now you can invest in ETFs with TD Ameritrade for free, plus the new account incentives I just mentioned, are you going to consider it when looking for a brokerage account?
