Brian: I also use online banks for my short-term cash, except that I use FNBO and IGoBanking for higher rate. I have HSBC as well, but it's mainly for T-bill purchases when the rates were attractive (not now though). I don't like CDs because the yields are usually no better than online banks and they are not as flexible.

As a lazy investor who doesn't like to manage tons of accounts, I tend to throw all short-term cash in an HSBC Direct account. Online accounts have become a great alternative to those who had to go through the hassle of CD laddering for solid, short-term returns.

Also, FNBO Direct - 6% promotional for another month, not sure what it'll be after but could be 5.25%.

For people who live in Southern NY State area: Patriot National Bank in Mount Kisco, NY offers 5.5 APY on a 10-month CD -- grand opening, promotional rate. Not sure how long it'll be, it's already been a month since they opened.

I found your blog as a resource on what's going on among our competitors. Nationwide Bank now offers a Money Market account with a 4.85% APY. This is one of the highest rates I've seen out there. However, I don't ever see it included in any comparison lists.

I thought in the current credit crunch environment, more and more people are looking for a good place to put their money. I thought you and you readers may be interested. Here is the link http://www.nationwide.com/nw/bank/savings/savings-money-market/money-market.htm#Features.
