Best Cash Back Credit Cards
I am a credit card person. Wherever possible, I use credit cards to pay for my purchases. To me, credit cards are my friend, not foe. The reasons for me to favor credit cards over debit cards or cash are twofold:
- I know exactly where my money went,
- I can get cash back for the money I have to spend.
Among more than two dozens of cards I own, four are in my wallet. They are the cards that I use the most to cover my everyday purchases, each for a different purpose:
- Chase Freedom Card: At gas stations and grocery stores (3% cash back).
- Costco TrueEarnings Card from American Express: At Costco (1% cash back) and restaurants (3% cash back) where AMEX is accepted. This card also has 3% rebates on gas, but not every gas station accepts AMEX.
- Citi UPromise Card: Shop online through UPromise (rebate rates vary, but could be as high as 10% depending on merchants). The UPromise card allows me to earn 2% cash back at Exxon and Mobil stations.
- Fidelity 529 College Rewards Card: Everywhere else (2% cash back). The new version of this card (from AMEX) only offers 1.5% cash back. Cash rebates will be invested in a Fidelity 529 plan.

Deal: Kingston 2GB DataTraveler USB 2.0 Flash Drive for $6.95

The final cost is $51.95 - $25 (mail-in-rebate) - $20 Google Checkout coupon = $6.95, not bad for a 2GB drive. I bought the same one early last month for $9.95.
The rebate will expire tomorrow December 2nd. I have dealt with Kingston rebates before for both memory and flash drive and never had any problem.

Nortel Consolidated Its Common Shares
When I looked at the quote of Nortel Network (NT) this morning, I couldn't believe what I saw: $20.96 per share, up 875% from yesterday!
What's going on?
Well, nothing much except that now I only own 230 shares instead of 2300 shares yesterday. NT implemented the consolidation today. The reverse split is at a ratio of 10-to-1. For more information about the consolidation, click here.

From Buy-and-Sell to Buy-and-Hold: Four Years of Trading History
It has been a little over four years since I opened my Scottrade brokerage account and started trading stocks. Back then, I was so excited about making quick money from the stock market that I kept the Scottrade trading window open from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm almost every day and didn't really do any research before jumping in. Pure speculation, to say the most. Good thing at that time was that stocks were very cheap after the dotcom burst and most stocks I bought were under $5. There were lots of them, even some very decent companies' stocks can be bought for only a few bucks. So even when I took a loss, the size of losses was at the level that I could swallow.
Last night, I logged in to my Scottrade account and collected all the trading data for the past four years. I was surprised how few trades I have made since 2005 and almost all of them were buys. And those stocks I bought in the recent two years, I still hold them. Actually, all the big profits I made from trading were from those stocks that I hold for longer than a year. Of course I didn't make much money from the quick in-and-out either.
So, here's a look of what I did in the past four years in trading stocks.
