American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card $150 Bonus

Early last year American Express replaced its Blue Cash card with the new Blue Cash Everyday Card. The Blue Cash Everyday Card offers cardholders rebates for everyday purchases, such as 3% cashback at supermarkets, 2% at gas stations and department stores, and 1% everywhere else.  And just like the old card, the Blue Cash Everyday Card has no membership fee. As you can see, the benefits of the Blue Cash Everyday Card are quite standard. You can get them pretty much from every rewards credit card these days, with no annual fee.

But if you want to get more rewards, there’s another version of Blue Cash Card from American Express. The American Express Blue Card Preferred Card allows card members to earn more rebates than then Everyday Card:

  • 6% cashback at supermarkets
  • 3% cashback at gas stations and department stores
  • 1% cashback else where

Of course, these extra benefits don’t come free. To get them, you will have to pay an annual membership fee of $75. The membership isn’t low, obviously. But if you shop a lot at supermarkets, the additional cashback of the Preferred Card could help reduce the burden, or even cover the membership fee all together. And just as the Everyday Card, there’s no minimum amount to spend to earn the cashback, no enrollment required and you get fixed rebate rates all year long.

If you are interested in getting the Blue Cash Preferred card, there’s a one-time bonus offered from American Express to get you started. You can receive a $150 cash bonus if you spend $1,000 or more within the first three months of membership. In addition, you can also earn additional bonus by referring family members or friends to AMEX. For each person you referred who is approved for the Preferred Card, you will receive a $75 referral bonus and there’s no limit on how many people you can refer (the Blue Cash Everyday Card also has a referral program that allows you to earn $25 for each successful referral).

Currently the Preferred Card also offers an introductory rate of 0% APR for 12 months on purchases. If you are planning a major purchase or a summer vacation in the coming months, it will be nice to use this card to pay for it without having to worry about any interest charges.

Check it out to see whether you like the Preferred Card or the no-fee Everyday Card.

Ignoring the cashback incentives. How much extra would you have to spend in the supermarket with the American Express Card to cover your costs than with the Blue Card?
I think I will write my next post on this. Thank you for the idea. I’ll let you know when I’ve written it.
