Check in the Mail

That’s a pleasant surprise.

I didn’t realize that I have been using my AMEX Costco TrueEarnings card for a year already until I found a check in the mail tonight from AMEX. It’s a rebate check of $74 for spending $5,228 with the card in the past year for eating out, traveling and shopping at my local Costco store. Here’s the breakdown of the rebats:

  • Eating out: $10.74 @ 3% rebate
  • Traveling: $29.11 @ 2% rebate
  • Everywhere Else (only at Costco): $34.15 @ 1% rebate

Not a big amount and can only be redeemed at Costco, but I am happy to get something back for the money I had to spend. In the middle of the year, I will get another rebate check from Costco for being an Executive member when I renew my membership. I hesitated a little last year when asked if I wanted to pay $50 more on membership fee to convert from Goldstar to Executive. Just to break even, I would have to spend at least $2,500 a year to get that $50 fee back through rebates (Executive member can earn 2% rebate from Costco). So all together, I can get 3% back for shopping at Costco, not a bad deal and we will certainly pass the $2,500 annual spending mark.

Yes, this is the card that’s giving me some trouble recently. Coming with the check is a card statement saying that pending investigation, I don’t have to pay the $75.80 in dispute, though I have paid them already. Hopefully, it can be resolved soon so I can continue to use the card without worrying too much of the card being compromised.
