Check Your Tax Refund Status Online
Like last year, I mailed out our tax forms one day ahead of the tax deadline, which is today. In the past I usually waited till the last minute to file, and, as you can imagine, it was never a pleasant trip to the post office on April 15th. I know, I could have used e-filing to save the trip to the post office and the $6.58 postage for the certified mail. True, e-filing is fast, easy, and secure, but it only makes if I will get a refund. Since I am not expecting anything, I am not that eager to have Uncle Sam take my money from me.
Speaking of refund, if you are expecting one from the IRS, you probably wonder when it will arrive (I always want to know when it will come if there’s money for me
). If you have already made plans for the refund and want to know the status, whether it will come in as a check or be directly deposited to your bank account, there’s an easy way to do so. It is the Where’s My Refund tool from the IRS.
To check and track your refund status using Where’s My Refund, you will need to provide the following information:
- Your Social Security Number (or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number);
- Filing status (Single, Married Filing Joint Return, Married Filing Separate Return, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow(er))
- The exact whole dollar amount of your refund
If you filed electronically, which you should if the IRS owes your money, the refund information will be available 72 hours after receiving confirmation from the IRS. If you filed by mail, the the status will be updated 3 to 4 weeks after the return is mailed.
