Get First Checked Bag for Free with AMEX Delta SkyMiles Cards
A couple of years ago, when airlines first started to add surcharges for checked-in baggage, their excuses were to use the extra fees to offset high fuel cost. At that time, the price of a barrel of crude oil was something like $140 and there were predictions that the cost of oil could go up to $200/barrel.
Look at the oil price now. The financial crisis and global recession have cut demands for oil around the world and the price has plummeted. At below $75 a barrel, the price now is less than half of its peak. You could argue that it’s much cheaper now to fly the planes than it was in 2007. Unfortunately, that’s not what the airlines are thinking and those fees introduced by airlines when the oil price peaked didn’t go away with the falling oil price. They are probably to stay forever because, without the extra fees for baggage, drinking, meals, even blankets and pillows, airliners will be in a even deeper hole.
Since I don’t travel much, the extra cost doesn’t have impact on me. If you are a frequent traveler, do you hate it when you buy a $200 ticket, but have to pay $15 or $25 to check-in your bag on each trip? I know I don’t like a bit. If you also don’t like the extra fee, you could get some relief if Delta Airline is the carrier you use most often.
American Express and Delta Airline have just launched a new program for American Express Delta SkyMiles cardholders. Starting June 1, 2010, Delta SkyMiles Credit Cardmembers will receive a free checked bag on every Delta flight – up to a $50 savings per person on a round-trip. Cardmembers automatically receive a first checked bag fee waiver upon check-in. In addition, friends and family members can enjoy the benefit. The benefit is available for up to nine people in the same reservation. For a family of four, the savings could be up to $200 on a round-trip.
AMEX cards that are eligible for this benefit include Gold and Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card and Reserve Delta SkyMiles Credit Card. In addition to the first bag free benefit, the Platinum Card also has the following features, at the cost of $150 annually:
- Earn 20,000 bonus SkyMiles (including 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles) after first purchase and another 2,500 for adding an Additional Cardmember
- Earn one companion Coach Class ticket each year upon renewal
- Earn at least 1 mile for every eligible dollar spent
- Miles never expire and there is no cap on the miles you can earn
- Pay with Miles: Pay for all or part of your flight with miles – and put the rest on your Card
- Express Approval. Get a decision in less than 60 seconds.
Addition benefits of the Reserve Delta SkyMiles card are also available.
