Expect to pay more when you ship a package next year, even though the gas price has come down sharply in recent months.

USPS announced today that it will increase shipping costs or Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Select, Parcel Return Service and some international shipping products starting January 18, 2009. On average, shipping costs will increase about 5%. Detailed price increases are as follows:

Service Average Price Increase
Express Mail 5.7%
Priority Mail 3.9%
Parcel Select 5.9%
Parcel Return Service 5.3%
International Shipping Services 8.5%

This round of price changes don’t include standard first class mail. According to the announcement, prices changes for other mailing services such as stamp prices will be announced in February 2009. Last time when USPS adjusted stamp prices, the price for one-ounce first class mail went up 1 cent from 41 cents to 42 cents. The price will definitely go up at least one cent in May 2009.

Now it’s really the time to stock up Forever Stamps :)
