Weekend Linkage – August 3, 2008
A new host
Some of you may have noticed that there was something going on to the site last night. Basically, I moved this from Bluehost, which was the host for the past two years, to Media Temple. The reason for the move was that I started to have some problem with their server since last month. Everytime I made some changes, either a post or design, 80% of the time I got the “CPU Exceed Quota” error and the site stayed down for a few minutes. I can tolerate if the error doesn’t occur everyday. But if it happens several times a day, that’s a little bit too much. And every time I contact Bluehost for the problem via their Live Chat, they just copied and pasted a standard answer. So after some researches, I decided to move, a month before my current contract with Bluehost expires. Hopefully, I won’t have problems like that again.
Weekend readings
Here are some what I read over the weekend from The Money Writers and beyond.
How to Lose Customers “In every way that matters, dealing with the post-Soviet state services was easier than dealing with the horrendous post-globalization customer service we have to deal with in America today.”
Reduce Your Grocery Bill With These Practical Tips “I’m finally getting really good at the coupon game now, and I’m regularly saving $50 to $80 off each week’s shopping trip.”
How SIPC Works and How SIPC Differs from FDIC Insurance “Just like how the FDIC insures bank deposits in the event of a bank failure, SIPC insures investment accounts in the event of a failure. In the case with SIPC, accounts are insured up to $500,000 per account.”
Bundled Football Tickets, Video Game Systems, Music, and DVDs… Arrrg! “It really comes down to money. Executives of companies have found some ways to get you and I to give them our money. They play with our emotions to make their sale.”
$1.8 Million Net Worth – How I Got From There to Here “QCash, the 37 year old retired millionaire, goes through his history of net worth updates to show us how he progressed to where he is today.”
Six Ways You Can Earn Extra Money This Weekend “A few ways you can earn $50 this weekend, including donate a lot of blood.”
How to Make Early Roth IRA Withdrawals “It’s easy to get confused as to when you can withdraw money from your Roth IRA. Is it after 5 years? Is it at age 59.5? Is it anytime?”
Saying Yes to Up-Sell is Saying No to Being Frugal “There is however one negative side effect of up-selling because agreeing to buying the more expensive product is not a frugal practice. We all know that we are not too disciplined when it comes to spending. When we are given a choice to buy the better product, chances are we will.”
I don’t Care How Much Exxon Makes Per Second! “We have a lot of our comforts and prosperity because these folks went out to find the oil and develop the refining technology.”
Bills-In-A-Box: The Stress-Free System For Organizing Your Finances – Non-Monthly Bills “You should have 13 folders in your box. 12 of these are labeled with the months of the year. The 13th folder should be labeled Accounts.”
Online Bill Pay – Cheaper, Faster, Greener, More Secure “I love paying my bills online. If it is possible for me to pay a bill online, I will.”
Streamline Comparison Shopping With Benchmark Per Unit Prices “I’ve started a list of per unit “buy it now” prices. These are prices on items that if I see anything below that price (or can use coupons to get it there), it is a very good deal and I should stock up.”
