Weekend Linkage – November 2, 2008
When I was vacationing in China last month, I skipped all the roundups that I usually do in the weekend. It’s time to get back to normal. But before I share the weekend readings, here’s a quick recap of the U.S. stock market last week.
Basically, the last week of October saved the month, though not enough to put major indices back into positive territory. The latest 0.5% rate cut from the Fed and bargain hunters helped U.S. stocks stage “their steepest weekly surge in 34 years” (Bloomberg). For the week, the S&P 500 gained 10% to 968.75, the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 11% to 9,325.01, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq rallied 11% to 1720.95.
