Weekend Linkage – October 4, 2009

We were quite happy with the apartment we rent until last week when the neighbor upstairs started to make this huge noise, some time it didn’t stop until 1:00 in the morning. Last Wednesday, when I worked from home, the pounding noise every few minutes almost drove me crazy. So I went upstairs to see what the tenant above us was going. It turned out that it was nothing but the lady living upstairs walking in the kitchen. I complained to the management because it was really disturbing, but was told that there isn’t anything they can do if she just walks, except making some suggestions to the tenant.

I know things like this happen when living in an apartment building, but still it’s just hard for me to imagine how hard a person can walk. Seriously, every time she walks, it feels like the house is shaking. Any good ideas on how we can make her walk a little quieter?

Ascertain her age, health issues: does she have problems with walking? Does she have carpeting? Can she afford such? Is she at all aware of the problem? Does she wear corrective shoes or a brace?

Sometimes all you need do is tell them the problem and ask for some thoughtfulness on their part.

Do this in a pleasant manner and even offer to help/buy throw rugs for her.

If there is any anger in the exchange-there will be no success.

If the anger comes from her-it is probably more of a control issue coming from an unknown source which does not promise success.

This may not be the other tenant’s fault. Is it possible that the apartment building has inadequate sound proofing? Some of my friends live in an apartment in which their landlord lives underneath. They walk around the house without shoes and often very carefully. However, he constantly complains of them treading heavily. The issue here is, there is nothing under floors upstairs and the ceiling downstairs. If management refuses to put in any sound proofing, you may want to ask the tenant upstairs if she would be willing to put a large rug in the room above your bedroom. This often helps to dampen the sound.
